What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a targeted manual therapy that involves the assessment and treatment of soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue. Treatment aims to relieve musculoskeletal pain and tension, improve mobility and circulation, and support relaxation and functional movement.

Each session is tailored to the body’s individual needs, using a combination of gentle, flowing techniques and more focused, deeper work where required. Rather than offering a general full-body massage, treatments focus on the areas that most require support to restore balance and improve movement.

Where appropriate, treatment may also incorporate Visceral Manipulation, a gentle, hands-on therapy that supports the natural movement and function of the internal organs and surrounding connective tissues. Using precise, subtle techniques and light, targeted pressure, this approach encourages the body’s natural healing processes, helping to improve mobility, ease tension, and enhance overall function without force or strain.

Remedial massage treatments may also integrate principles from Bowen Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, and Kinesiology to further support the body’s natural ability to rebalance and encourage longer-lasting relief.

By tailoring each session to your individual needs, Cathie will spare no effort to help you enjoy greater comfort, balance, and mobility. To book a remedial massage appointment, call 0409 961 145.

Remedial Massage & Cupping

Remedial massage combined with vacuum cupping offers a powerful approach to relieving muscle tension and restoring movement. Cupping uses gentle suction to lift the fascia (connective tissue), helping to release tightness, improve circulation and reduce inflammation.

When integrated with remedial massage, this technique allows for deeper muscle relaxation and helps break down fascial restrictions, supporting more effective and lasting results.

During your session, cups are applied to targeted areas to create controlled suction, encouraging improved blood flow, faster recovery and sustained relief. This therapy is particularly beneficial for chronic pain, deep-seated tension and ongoing muscular discomfort, supporting improved mobility and overall wellbeing.

Remedial Message & Dry Needling

Cathie offers remedial massage combined with dry needling to effectively target pain and muscular tension. This specialised technique allows her to treat specific problem areas with precision, making it suitable for a wide range of conditions.

Dry needling may assist with shoulder and lower back pain, tight calves, tennis or golfer’s elbow, upper trapezius tension and frozen shoulder, among other concerns.

The treatment involves the gentle insertion of fine, single-use sterile needles into tight or restricted muscles to release trigger points and restore movement. The needles are typically left in place for several minutes before being safely removed, after which massage therapy continues to enhance the overall results.

This combined approach helps relieve pain, improve mobility and support faster recovery.

Scar Tissue Release

Scar tissue release is a targeted remedial massage treatment designed to reduce restriction, improve mobility and support the body’s natural healing processes. It focuses on areas where scar tissue may be causing tightness, discomfort, or reduced range of motion.

Using gentle, hands-on techniques, Cathie assesses the affected area and works carefully through the surrounding soft tissue. Treatment may involve sustained pressure, stretching, and remedial massage to improve tissue glide and flexibility.

Each session is tailored to your needs, with care taken to support comfort throughout the treatment. This approach may assist with pain relief, improved function and greater ease of movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How is remedial massage different from relaxation massage?

Remedial massage focuses on specific problem areas and functional outcomes, such as improving mobility or easing muscle tightness. Relaxation massage is generally lighter and designed to promote calm. Remedial sessions often include assessment, targeted techniques, and aftercare advice. Pressure can be adjusted, but treatment remains goal-directed and therapeutic.

  • What should I do after a remedial massage?

After a session, drink water and allow time for your body to settle. Mild soreness can occur, especially after deeper work, and usually eases within a day or two. Gentle movement and light stretching may help. Avoid heavy training immediately if advised. If symptoms worsen significantly, seek medical advice.

  • Are there times when remedial massage isn’t recommended?

Remedial massage may not be appropriate with fever, infection, recent fractures, blood clots, uncontrolled medical conditions, or certain skin issues. Recent surgery requires clearance and careful technique. If you have severe pain, numbness, unexplained swelling, or neurological symptoms, seek medical assessment first. Always disclose medications and health conditions beforehand.

  • Is remedial massage a full body massage?

No. Cathie’s Remedial Massage focuses on the areas that most need support rather than providing a full body massage. Each session is tailored on the day, using gentle flowing techniques alongside deeper targeted work where appropriate. This focused approach supports effective release while respecting the body’s limits and needs.

  • Is remedial massage health fund claimable?

Yes. Cathie is Diploma qualified, and Remedial Massage treatments are health fund claimable, depending on individual cover. Clients are encouraged to check with their provider regarding rebates. Treatments support muscle tension relief, nervous system calming, and improved mobility as part of a considered holistic care approach.

  • What should I do after my treatments?

After your session, we recommend drinking plenty of water and allowing your body time to integrate the treatment. A warm shower or bath with Epsom salts, or the application of a heat pack, may also assist in easing any post-treatment soreness.
